The Western Ghats is considered as one of the top ten global biodiversity hot-spots. These mountains cover approximately 1,40,000 sq km and is home to a number of endemic plants, animals, birds, amphibian and reptilian species. Apart from over 450 species of birds (35% endemic) and 140 mammal species (around 20% endemic), the Ghats host approximately 260 reptile species (over 60% endemic). A number of amphibians are endemic to the Western Ghats and the area has become a hotspot of discovery of new species of frogs in the last decade. Welcome to one of our most eagerly awaited herpetofauna photography expeditions to Wyanad, a heaven for macro lovers. The participants of this workshop will experience a whole new world of endemic lesser fauna of the Western Ghats while trekking through the forests and walking down the trails.

Dr Caesar Sengupta is a globally acclaimed Wildlife Conservation Photographer, a National Geographic educator, freelance writer and trainer. He is a Canon India EOS Maestro, a qualified MD Medical Microbiologist and is also the Founder Director of DCP Expeditions LLP, which is India's one of the largest Wildlife, Nature and Travel Photography Community Platform, operating since 2010 and now present in 21 cities across India. He conducts regular photography workshops and field expeditions across the country. He has travelled far and wide across Indian geography and beyond. He has the timeless distinction of having a frog species discovered in 2014 named after him - The Indosylvirana caesari also known otherwise as the Maharashtra Golden Backed Frog. Through his photography, he tries to depict the untold and unseen beauties of nature.

You can drive down from Bangalore (around 300 Km – 7 hours drive).
Things to carry:
We request all participants to reach Wayand before evening on day 1. The nearest airport / railway station is Kozhikode (also called Calicut). Wayanad is around 66 Km from Kozhikode, which is around 2 hours on road. If you plan to drive down from Bangalore, you may contact our admin team for possibility of car pooling. Once we reach the resort, our Photography and biodiversity expert would guide you through the entire plan for the trip. After the room allotment process, freshen up and join the camp briefing. After a short discussion on the possible target species of the region and a few tips and tricks on Macro photography, enjoy a delicious dinner at the camp site. Take some rest and join the night trail in search of the amazing herpetofauna of Wayanad.
In the mornings, we will have trails in the forest, we may come across many species of birds and butterflies in addition to the herpetofauna. In the afternoons we will have discussions and image review sessions on the images made during the field outings. In the evenings, we will go out for the amazing night trail and herpetofauna photography of the biodiversity of Wayanad.
The expedition ends here after breakfast. Its now return home with some amazing experience, memories and card full of images of the Wayand magic.
