Gibbon and Kaziranga - Wildlife Photography Masterclass Expedition

Sandwiched between the Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal, the narrow strip of land known as Northeast India serves as a corridor connecting the people, fauna and flora of the Indian subcontinent to tropical Southeast Asia and the more temperate northern Asian climes. It is one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots. India has an exceptionally rich heritage of non-human primate populations totaling 15 species. The northeast region has the richest primate diversity in India, largely due to its location in the transitional zone between the Indian and Indo–Chinese sub-regions. Eleven species have so far been recorded from this NE region. Except for the Golden langur and Phayre’s langur, all other species have a large extent of occurrence in the region. The only sanctuary in India, which is supposedly a primate treatise is named after a highly endangered primate species in India - the Hoolock Gibbons (Bunopithecus hoolock). The Hollangapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a small patch of rainforest an hour from Jorhat. Rightfully it can be called ‘An oasis in the desert’ - an island of dense evergreen rain forest patch in the midst of sprawling tea gardens all around.

Kaziranga - the land of giants, famous for India’s big 4 – the Tiger, the elephant, the rhino and the wild buffalo. Some also include the rare swamp deer as the 5th big. But the deer is hardly big although it is a beautiful golden deer. Kaziranga is also a land of superlatives. It has highest density of Tigers in India, it is one of Indias best managed national parks and is also one of the most scenic national parks of India. Kaziranga is also one of India's greatest conservation success stories. The jewel in the crown of Kaziranga is the Indian one horned rhinoceros. In the 1930s, there were less than 20 rhinos here. Poaching and habitat loss had decimated its population. Today there are more than 1500 rhinos here, and about the same number of wild buffalo and elephants. Along with the rhino, Kaziranga remains one of the best places in the world to see the wild buffalo. The wild buffalo of Kaziranga have the longest spread of horns of any animal in the world.
