About The Tour

Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest of all the National parks in the country, established in 1936 as Hailey National Park located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand state. This beautiful and well maintained park is the only one in the country where you get an opportunity to stay deep inside the forest. This is not a regular Tiger Photography tour. This, as the name suggests, is an exquisitely crafted wildlife photography training workshop where you get to shoot along with our masterclass mentor, get your images reviewed by him every day and get guided for the immediate next steps for improvements. It is an exposure to hardcore wildlife photography at one of the best national parks of the country to photograph birds, mammals and landscapes all in one place via direct handholding by our mentor.

The Dhikala / Gairal area of Corbett National Park is probably the finest to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The huge expanse of the grasslands, called "Chaurs" are the attraction of this area of the Park. The location of the Dhikala forest rest house is deep inside the heart of the forest and wildlife can be observed from the verandah of your room. The rooms are clean, with floor tiling and attached western toilets. The rest house has electricity 24x7 and there is a back up generator for emergency. The lodge boasts of a fine wildlife library too. The restaurant serves only vegetarian Indian, Chinese & Continental food.

Itinerary

Arrive at Delhi airport by 12pm. We will then leave for Ramnagar by road and have meals on the way. Reaching Ramnagar by evening, we will check-into our resort which is located on the way to Dhikala and is one of the best resorts in Ramnagar ensuring proper safety measures are in place for the trip to be risk free. Overnight at the resort in Ramnagar. We will plan and set the tone for the trip during a discussion over dinner and make a rough plan as to what we want to get in terms of images from the trip.

We will travel to Dhikala today after breakfast and we should start from the resort by 9:00am. As we enter Dhangarhi gate at 10:00am, the adventure and wildlife safari to Corbett begins. The drive to Dhikala is 32 kms from the gate. We take a very slow and leisurely drive. We will be stopping at places on the way to photograph birds and landscapes. The Himalayan foothills are one of the natural wonders of the earth, with lush sub-tropical forests and the bountiful flora & avifauna that is a tribute to the nature lover and the photographer of the wild. The Dhikala Forest rest house has a fantastic setting overlooking the Ramganga reservoir and the opportunity to see wildlife in its natural habitat is immense. As you reach the rest house, take some rest and join the group for lunch. An evening Jeep safari to the grasslands called "Chaurs", for a chance sighting of the elusive Tiger- now the cynosure of every tourists' questing eye. Dhikala rest house is encircled by a solar fence for your safety - it is an unforgettable experience to sit out on your verandah and enjoy the wild sounds of the night.

Overnight stay at Dhikala Forest Lodge.

Corbett is a paradise for mammal aficionados and bird watchers alike and is one of the top locations in India to photograph animals in their natural habitat making it ideal to create the best storytelling images.

The settings in which elephants can be photographed here is unique to the place and shall give us some really unique images given the fantastic winter light which makes it possible to shoot throughout the day.

An early morning Jeep safari into the wilderness of Corbett and beyond, is the most promising way of tracking Tigers in Corbett besides other mammal species. An evening Jeep safari along the rippling Ramganga river, crossing the river at the Gathiarao fair-weather bridge to the Kanda range where Jim Corbett shot the famous Kanda man eater. The opportunity to observe & photograph wildlife in its prime habitat, is an experience one succumbs to without much hesitation.

Overnight stay at Dhikala Forest Lodge.

Early morning Jeep Safari in Corbett National Park, with its varied topography, diverse flora & fauna, the beauty of the meandering Ramganga river, the natural splendor of its landscapes, the park is a precious heritage. We explore the forest areas on our way back, with the possibility of seeing five species of Kingfishers, Pallas & Himalayan Grey headed Fishing Eagles, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle and of course the mammalia, the Safari is truly magical. Check out time is 1100 hrs *but we will decide mutually on the exit time as we have to drive back to Delhi today to catch our flights back home.*

As we leave Dhikala on our way out, this becomes our 8th Safari as we've had good experiences in the past on this road with respect to wildlife and it is highly recommended to travel with your photography gear handy. The unending stretch of the virgin Sal forests, the vast texture of massive trees, plumages of peacocks dragging the forest floor, the images of deer jumping across the forest track, all make a tour to Corbett Tiger Reserve a veritable paradise for the avid wildlife photographer.

After reaching Ramnagar we change vehicle to drive back to Delhi and will have lunch on the way.

Field Learnings

The sole purpose of the trip will be to create images that break the mold of age old images created out of Corbett. We will concentrate completely on utilising light to our advantage and creating atmospheric and storytelling images from the place which stand out from the scores of images coming from photographers visiting the location.

Apart from covering the basic techniques like exposure control, auto-focussing, lighting aspects and utilising various shutter speeds to our advantage we will also emphasize on the creative aspect of photography which is painstaking but an extremely satisfying process.

We will also edit our images after shooting every day and black & white image processing will also be covered during the trip.
