India is home to a varied array of habitats and one of them are the deserts. ‘The Thar' is India’s only hot desert which covers an area of approximately 1,70,000 sq. km of which more than 60% lies in the state of Rajasthan. Looking barren and empty to an untrained eye, deserts are home to some very interesting species which have adapted to living in arid climatic conditions. The Thar Desert is home to many notable reptile and insect species which are specifically adapted to living in this habitat and are found nowhere else in India.
Some target species:
Brilliant agama, Toad-headed agama, Jerdon’s lacertid, Indian fringe-fingered lizard, Spiny-tailed lizard, Common monitor lizard, Desert monitor lizard, Keeled rock gecko, Sind sand gecko, Persian micro gecko, Sandfish, Sind awl-headed snake, Schokari sand racer, Red sand-boa, Glossy-bellied racer, Red spotted royal snake, Saw-scaled viper etc.
