About The Tour

The Sinharaja Rainforest is located in Sri Lanka's southwest lowland wet zone, in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. It covers an area of 11,000 hectares of primary and secondary forests. The Sinharaja Rainforest is a treasure trove of endemic wildlife and fauna, including birds, trees, butterflies, and mammals. It's also home to over 60% of Sri Lanka's endemic trees, many rare. The Sinharaja Rainforest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot. The Sinharaja Rainforest has three entrances, several trails, and waterfalls. It's easily accessible from Galle

Soumendra Mukhopadhyay

Panel Expert - DCP Mumbai

Soumendra Mukhopadhyay, an engineer by profession and a wildlife photographer by passion. Soumendra specializes in macro photography. He is extremely passionate about what he does and experiments continuously to polish his skillsets every time he is out in the field with his camera. He shares his knowledge of photography selflessly with people around him. His images have been appreciated and acknowledged in various online forums, articles and magazines. He is a talented photographer and has great teaching acumen. He is a Panel Expert for Team DCP, Mumbai. He uses the camera as a tool for conservation as his work generates awareness in common man about the hidden beauties of nature and earth's natural history.

The tour starts from Katunayake Airport with pickup from there around 9:30 AM after other check-in formalities. Since the journey will take approx. 3 hours around, we will start around 10 AM

Getting Ready

Things to carry:

Carrying your macro lens is a primary need
Also carry wide-angle lenses if you try to sheet off-beat compositions
Headlight (Rechargeable recommended) and Powerful Waterproof Torch. Headlights allow both hands to operate your camera.
Fully charged batteries for your camera & flash
Fill your camera bag with silica gel to protect your gadgets from moisture. They are available in chemist shops
Battery charger. Carry an extra pack of camera batteries
Backup memory cards / HDD storage drives, Laptop
Carrying a Tripod is not a must for this Tour
Big towel/cloth to protect your gear
Rain Poncho for self and Gear Safety along with umbrella
A good pair of Gumboots is recommended. In case you are reluctant to use Gum Boots, do carry tough shoes (preferably covering up to the ankle).
Carrying Leech socks is advisable
Please carry Odomos to keep you protected from mosquito bites
Carry Permite cream to keep you protected from tick bites.
Carry a pair of Light Trekking chappal

Itinerary

Day 1

After Pick up from the Airport (Katunayake) we will move to Kithulgala enjoy the scenic drive to the park and settle into your accommodation.

Afternoon birding and photography in the nearby area.

Night walk for herping around Makandawa rainforest.

Overnight stay at Kithulgala

Day 2

Wake up early morning, and pre-breakfast birding around the lodge. After breakfast, visit Makandawa rainforest for photography of various butterflies, dragonflies, birds, amphibians, and snakes. Return back for lunch and take a rest.

We will go for the afternoon birding around a tea plantation area nearby.

Overnight stay at Kithulgala

Day 3

Get up Early morning and depart to Sinharaja with a packed breakfast.

The journey will take approx. 4 hrs amidst the greenery of the forest

Lunch at Sinharaja stay

Afternoon birding and photography in the outskirts of the Sinharaja rainforest.

Night walk in the same area for herping and amphibians.

Overnight stay at Sinharaja

Day 4

We will get up early and go for morning birding around the hotel and after breakfast, a full-day excursion to Sinharaja rainforest with packed breakfast.

Birding, herping, butterflies, dragonflies, and various species for macro photography.

Night walk for herping in the outskirts of the forest.

Overnight stay at Sinharaja

Day 5

With a packed breakfast and all items packed, we will drive to Ketawalapathana ( buffer zone of the rainforest) for a few specific endemic birds and another morning photography session.

We will have Lunch at the hotel or en route and head to the airport.

We need to reach 03 hours before the departure flight schedule.

Return Flight at 8 PM

Field Learnings

On-field learning from the experts is said to be one of the best methods of improving your skillsets. Our Wildlife Photography Expert will handhold you at every possible step for a better understanding of perspectives, camera controls, and how to make use of the best opportunities to get better images. The training will focus on the following

Exposure control in the field under difficult light conditions
Mastering metering techniques (Spot, partial, center-weighted, evaluative)
Mastering auto focus, focusing points, AF locking and focus tracking for moving subjects

Image Review Session

To maximize and complete your photographic learning, join our evening session of informal discussions on image review. Our Expert will work on a few of yours (which you have clicked during the day) and demonstrate various techniques to give a final shape to your artwork. The following will be discussed

Histogram and exposure control
Colour correction methods
Cropping and image resizing
