The Namib Desert is considered to be the World’s oldest desert, having some the tallest sand dunes of this planet Earth. We will be covering some of the most iconic destinations at Namibia including Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, the world famous Etosha National Park and Okonjima Plains Camp.
The Sossusvlei is a huge clay pan, enclosed by giant sand dunes. Some of the spectacular hills of sand are, at a height of 325 metres, the highest in the world. The Dead Pan is a large ghostly expanse of dried white Clay, punctuated by Skeletons of ancient camel thorn trees, 2 about 600 years old. The dunes of the Namib Desert have developed over a period of many millions of years. It is thought that the vast quantities of sand were deposited into the Atlantic Ocean by the Orange River.
Swakopmund was of major importance as a harbour during the German colonial era even though the water at the coast is too shallow and the bay is unprotected. But Lüderitz was too far away, and the seaport of Walvis Bay was in British possession in those days. On 4 August 1892 the crew of a gunboat named Hyena erected two beacons on a large dune, probably near the present lighthouse. This is regarded as the founding date of Swakopmund.
Etosha National Park is known for its vast salt pan, which is surrounded by dry thorny shrubs. A salt pan that is so large that it has been recorded even from the space; In the local Ovambo people’s language, Etosha means "Great White Place.". The place is dry with very little water around and hence teeming with wildlife around every waterhole that you will come across on your way.
Okonjima Plains Camp is situated midway between Etosha National Park and Windhoek. This will be our last halt during this expedition. The lodge is home to The AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organization, committed to the long-term conservation of Namibia’s large carnivores, notably cheetahs and leopards.
