About The Tour

Bhutan is known for its amazing birdlife. Obe can see an amazing harmony of life here. One can find more than 700 species of birds here. More than 70% of the country's total area is covered for the primary forest habitats of the Eastern Himalayas. During our stay there, you are likely to see: The famous five of Himalaya’s, Blood Pheasant (2 Sub species), Satyr Tragopan, Wards Trogon, Himalayan Monal and Himalayan Cutia. Other interesting birds include Maroon Oriole, Slender-billed Oriole, Himalayan Vulture (aka Griffon), Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Great Parrotbill, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide and numerous Warblers, Tits and Gross-beaks. Apart from the bird photography, the land offers excellent opportunities for photographing landscapes and candid portraits.

Getting Ready

Things to carry:

  • Telephoto lenses in the range 400 mm or higher
  • Mid range zoom (~ 70 - 200mm) for portraits
  • Wide angle lenses for the amazing landscapes
  • Carry fully charged batteries for your camera / flash.
  • Carry battery charger. Carry extra pack of camera batteries.
  • Carry backup memory cards / HDD storage drives, Laptop.
  • It is advisable to carry basic first aid along with you.
  • Please carry suitable mosquito repellants to keep you protected from mosquito bites.

Itinerary

Take a flight to Paro. Our representative will receive you from airport terminal, upon arrival we will check in hotel, later after check in we will proceed birding toward pachu area to scan for key species like Black-tailed Crake, Ibisbill, Solitary Snipe and other water birds.

Overnight at Paro Grand

We start early from the Hotel towards Chelela which is the highest motorable road in Bhutan (at 3998M). As the day breaks, we start looking for Blood Pheasants and Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Kalij Pheasant, White-browed Rosefinch, Greenish Warbler and other birds along the road side. We return to our hotel in time for lunch. Post lunch, we check out and head towards Thimbu our next stop. This drive offers some breathtaking views and we occasionally stop for taking some landscapes / photograph birds on the way. After checking in to our hotel followed by Tea / Coffee we will continue exploring common birds in and around capital.

Overnight in Lhayul

After breakfast we will make our journey to Punakha via Dochula Pass, we will try for species like Slender-billed Oriole,Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Lesser coucal,Blue-fronted Redstart, Eurasian Jay, Brown Parrotbill, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Kalij Pheasant, Black-winged Cuckooshrike,Rufous-bellied Woodpecker,Tickell’s Leaf Warbler, Slender-billed Scimitar babler, Ward's Trogon, Red Crossbill, White-winged Grosebeak, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide and other birds.

Overnight in Hotel Sonamgang

After early breakfast, we will drive to Pelela Pass(3450m) which takes an hour to reach and spend our morning hour birding along the old road of Pelela Pass looking for species like Himalayan Monal, Satyr Tragopan, Spotted Nutcracker, Fire-tailed Myzornis,Dark-rumped Rosefinch, White-browed Shortwing,Stripe-throated Yuhina,Rufous-vented Yuhina, Spotted Laughingthrush, Black-faced Laughingthrush,Golden-naped Finch, Scarlet Finch, White-winged Grosebeak,Eurasian Cuckoo, Himalayan Vulture, Breaded Vulture and other birds. After our birding we will gradually drive towards Trongsa, on a way will look for species like Brown Parrotbill, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Whiskered Yuhina, White-throated Laughingthrush and other birds.

Overnight in Hotel Norbulingka.

Early morning we will drive to Tingtibi on a way we will look for key species like Golden Babbler,Rufous-capped Babbler,Speckeled Piculet,White-browed Piculet,Crimson Sunbrid,Ashy Bulbul,Blue-throated Barbet,White-browed Scimitar Babbler,Mountain Bulbul,Blue-capped Rockthrush,Golden-thraoted Barbet and other species.

Overnight either in Hotel T-wang or Berti Eco-Lodge

Today we will look for species like White-hooded Babbler,Pale-billed Parrotbill,White-breasted Parrotbill,White-browed Scimitar Babbler,Lesser-neckleced Laughingthrush,Pin-tailed Green Pegion,Straited Yuhina,Bronzed Drongo and other Species.

Overnight either in Hotel T-wang or Berti Eco-Lodge

Today we will drive towards Bumthang but on our way we will scan to important key species Beautiful Nuthatch, Black-browed Scimitar Babbler, Black-throated Prinia,Black-thraoted Tit,Silver-eared Mesia,Nepal Fulvetta and the species we have missed on our previous drive.

Overnight night in Chumey Nature Resort

Species-Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Red Crossbill, Red-billed Chough, Eurasain Magpie, Black-faced Laughingthrush, Fire-tailed Sunbird, White-browed Bush Robin, Great Parrotbill, Fulvous Parrotbill, Red-tailed Minla, Whistler’s Warbler, Himalayan Wood Owl and May other Species.

Overnight in Hotel Kaila Guest House

After breakfast we will drive back and look for species like we missed and keep on moving our journey to Thimphu.

Overnight in Hotel Kuenphen Nobding

We will scan for those that we have missed in our previous journey.

Overnight in Hotel Paro Grand

We will drive you back to Paro Terminal. The tour ends here.


Field Learnings

On-field learning from the experts is said to be one of the best methods of improving your skill-set.
