About The Tour

Though Little Rann of Kuch (aka LRK) is synonymous with Indian Wild Ass as it’s last refuge in the world, the place is home to avian wonders too and comes alive during the winter months. The vast expanse of this cracked land often gleaming with mirages has more surprises to it than what meets the eye. This seemingly infinite landscape hosts a large assortment of bird species mainly Raptors. The sunrise and the sunset here are those fascinating moments when the golden light reflects upon the enduring wetlands, resulting in lighting up the entire horizon and mesmerizing anyone who experiences this spectacle.

This a paradise for the photographers as the Wild Asses kicking and running around unique habitat comprising of Saline mudflats, marshes, scrub-land & seasonal wetlands and a heaven for avian diversity ranging from waders to raptors. The prime focus of the trip is to observe and photograph different species of birds (that the land offers) ranging from residents to migrants to passage migrants.

Target species:

Though it is a bleak landscape, yet it has an extremely rich biodiversity and is an ecologically important area for wildlife and many local and migratory water birds & raptors. It is also home to various unique mammals apart from wild ass such as the Indian Wolf, Desert Fox, Striped Hyena, Nilgai, Desert Cat etc. The avian biodiversity is also amazing here. One can expect to see and make good photographs of Greater Hoopoe Lark, Macqueen's Bustard, Asian Desert Warbler, Isabelline Wheatear, Short-Eared Owl, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Greater-Spotted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Merlin, Common Kestrel, Lesser Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, Crested Lark, Greylag Goose, White Stork, Black Stork, Short-Toed Snake Eagle, Pellied-scops Owl, Isabelline Shrike, Rufous Shrike, Chestnut-Bellied Sandgrouse and many more.

Jaitra Khambhati is a passionate photographer, pursuing a life science IMSc from Ahmedabad University. He personally enjoys doing wildlife photography in the lap of nature and loves to explore different habitats to sight and photograph unique species. Although his expertise is in wildlife, Jaitra also enjoys exploring many other genres of photography as well. He has an eye for unique compositions and is thorough with his post-processing skills. He is a young and dynamic wildlife photographer and loves to share his knowledge with people around. He is currently associated with DCP as a Group Leader, Team Ahmedabad.

Getting Ready

Things to carry:

Telephoto lenses – preferably above 400 mm
Carry fully charged batteries for your camera / flash.
Carry battery charger. Carry extra pack of camera batteries
Carry backup memory cards / HDD storage drives, Laptop
Carrying a Tripod is a must for all bird photography workshops
Body Warmer for the chilly early mornings.
It is advisable to carry basic first aid along with you.
Please carry Odomos to keep you protected from mosquito bites.
Carry a pair of good binoculars

Itinerary

Day 1

Tour starts in the morning at 11:00 hrs from Ahmedabad. We will leave for Little Rann Of Kutch (95 kms from Ahmedabad) and reach at the hotel in Little Rann of Kutch about 13:00 hrs. Lunch will be en-route. Check in and get ready for the first safari which will start at 15:00 hrs. We shall try and look for water birds near shallow wetlands like bar-headed geese, grey lag geese, white-tailed lapwings, little grebe, common and demoiselle cranes, etc. End the session with stunning sunset images. Have dinner and rest for the night.

Day 2

Will start early at 6:00 hrs for a first safari of the day. We shall have breakfast en-route safari. We shall try and look for raptors like eastern imperial eagles, harriers, buzzards, some mammal species like blue-bulls, desert fox, etc. We shall be back around 12:30 hrs, Have a lunch and rest.

Second safari will start at 15:00 hrs. We shall try and look for peregrine falcons, merlin, and etc. larks species like Rufous tailed lark, desert lark, hoopoe lark etc. Back to hotel around 19:00 hrs. with interesting images. Review and discussion on the images captured during safaris. Have dinner and rest for the night.

Day 3

Will start early at 6:00 hrs for a first safari of the day. We shall have breakfast en-route. We shall try and look for raptors like vultures, eagles, short eared owls etc. Some species of mammals like wild-ass, blue-bulls etc. Back to hotel around 12:30 hrs, check-out, have lunch and rest.

Second safari will start at 15:00 hrs. We shall try and look for large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, Greater hoopoe lark. Here is a very good chance to get silhouette images of Indian wild-ass behind setting sun. We shall leave for Ahmedabad around 19:00 hrs. Reach Ahmedabad by about 22:30 after having dinner en route.

Field Learnings

On field learning from the experts is said to be one of the best methods of improving your skillsets. Our expert will hand hold you at every possible step for a better understanding of perspectives, camera controls and how to make use of the best opportunities to get better images. The training will focus on the following

Different modes of shooting (Av / A, Tv / S, M and P)
Exposure control in field under difficult light conditions
Mastering metering techniques (Spot, partial, center weighted, evaluative)
Mastering auto focus, focusing points, AF locking and focus tracking for moving subjects
How to get sharp images of moving subjects
Framing and composition in the field
